The 2025 International Summer Program at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) came to a close this August on the university’s South Campus in Guangzhou. With a focus on “China’s Economic Frontiers” and “Chinese Culture,” the program welcomed 38 students from 12 countries and regions, including Hong Kong and Macao. The experience offered participants fresh insights into contemporary China and strengthened their cross-cultural understanding.

In the “China’s Economy and Business” module, students were encouraged to explore how AI technologies are transforming traditional industries and improving decision-making processes. The courses also showcased “Chinese modernization” in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area through examples of regional integration, infrastructure connectivity, and institutional innovation.

In the “Chinese Language and Culture” module, basic Chinese lessons were integrated into cultural experiences such as tea ceremonies and traditional etiquette. Students also took part in activities like fan-making, bracelet weaving, and martial arts, gaining an immersive and multi-dimensional understanding of Chinese culture.

“The summer school gave me the chance to connect with young people from around the world, learn about different cultures, gain a deeper understanding of contemporary China, and even improve my Chinese. I look forward to coming back to Guangzhou in the future,” said Adil Benhallam, from the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University.

Beyond the classroom, students visited the Guangdong Museum and Yongqingfang to explore the heritage and innovation of Lingnan culture. They also toured the Shenzhen Reform and Opening-up Exhibition Hall to trace China’s remarkable path of development, strolled through Nantou Ancient Town to experience its historic legacy, and stopped by Huaqiangbei Electronics Market to witness the dynamism of China’s manufacturing industry firsthand.

“It blended Chinese culture seamlessly with academic courses and field trips, which gave me a real taste of Guangdong’s unique charm. It was truly fascinating and full of insights,” said Christina Qi, from Queen’s University, Canada.

Students’ Live Performance

Since its launch in 2010, SYSU International Summer School has held nine successful sessions, welcoming around 390 students from countries and regions including the U.S., the UK, France, Russia, Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar, as well as Hong Kong and Macao.

Wisanukorn Uthaisri, from Thailand’s National Institute of Development Administration, said the program gave him valuable lessons in Chinese language and economics, as well as unforgettable experiences through field trips and city tours in Guangdong.

He added that, despite the summer heat, he greatly enjoyed the program and looked forward to returning to China in the future.
