5th Sino-French Scholars High-Level Forum explores path to modernization

The Fifth Sino-French Scholars High-Level Forum was held at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) in Guangzhou on November 25. French President Emmanuel Macron once visited the campus in 2023.
This forum, themed “Modernization: Common vision and distinctive path”, brought together over 90 scholars and experts from China and France to exchange perspectives on the path to modernization.

In his address, Wei Haisheng, member of the CPPCC National Committee and former vice president of the Institute of Party History and Literature of the CPC Central Committee, said that the forum facilitates exchanges and discussions on the theories and practices of China and France, in their pursuit of modernization. It not only reviews historical experiences but also looks into the future, exploring universal principles and unique national characteristics. Wei stated that the forum serves as a vivid example of mutual engagement in Sino-French cultural exchanges and represents a meaningful effort to imbue the spirit of Sino-French diplomatic relations with new contemporary significance.

Gao Song, president of SYSU, said that coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and France, this forum can help enhance the understanding between Chinese and French scholars, inspiring ideas for future collaboration between the two nations. Gao underlined that the university has a century-old relationship with France, and has been a witness, participant and contributor to the exchanges and mutual learning of civilazations between China and France. In the future, SYSU will uphold inclusiveness and openness, making contributions to promoting friendship between the two nations.

Guillaume Roubaud-Quashie, president of the Gabriel Péri Foundation, advocated dialogue, rationality and cooperation in today’s world where the so-called "clash of civilizations", nationalism, racism, and xenophobia are on the rise. He stated that inclusiveness and cooperation are essential to build a better future.

The participants had in-depth discussions on topics such as how Chinese path to modernization differs from Western models, and why is it significant on a global scale. Topics like building a community of shared future for mankind, as well as the theories and practices of China and France in advancing modernization.
