SYSU Students Received Good Results in International Genetically Engineered Machine competition (iGEM 2011)

On Nov 7th, the final round of 2011 International Genetically Engineered Machine competition was held in Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the U.S.A. The team from SYSU-China won the bronze medal.

During Oct 14-16 in the Asian tournament held in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the SYSU-China Team worked together, met the challenges calmly and presented the research results brilliantly. They have become one of the top 18 teams in Asian tournament and got a ticket to the world final round. With great morale, they won the bronze medal in the final competition held in Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the U.S.A during November 5 to 7.

iGEM(International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition)was founded by Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2003 and developed into an international competition in 2005. The purpose of the competition is to promote international study, communication and cooperation among college students in synthetic biology and to promote the development of it. Synthetic biology is a cross-discipline subject emerged in the 21st century. The purpose of it is to use the concepts of systems biology and electrical engineering to achieve signal processing and precise control of the engineered organism, which is a leading subject of life science. As the number of teams increased dramatically, in order to ensure the quality and efficiency, iGEM contest official set up three major sub-divisions, which were Americas, Europe and Asia in this year's competition. Altogether, more than 150 teams participated in the competition. SYSU-China Team was in the Asian Division and there were 46 teams in the Asian Division, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Tokyo Institute of Technology. The competition was full of competent participants and highly competitive.
