Publicity Department Hosts 2012 Training Session for Student Editors and Journalists

On November 23 and 24, the Publicity Department of the SYSU Committee of the CPC organized and hosted the 2012 Training Session for Student Editors and Journalists. A total of over 120 student journalists and editors from Correspondent Stations of News Center on four campuses of SYSU, SYSU Homepage (Chinese Version and English version), SYSU News Net, Sun Yat-sen University Gazette, Television Station of Sun Yat-sen University, and Myspace, attended the training session, which includes a training seminar and team quality improvement.

During the training session, Xie Manhua, Director of the Publicity Department of the SYSU Committee of the CPC, pointed out that the purpose of the annual training sessions is to enhance connection and communication among student editors and reporters on four campuses of SYSU, promote professionalism in journalism, increase ability to coordinate and organize work, advocate the spirit of unity and cooperation, and bring into full play their role in reporting university news.

Zhang Zhian, associate professor, doctoral supervisor and assistant to the dean of the School of Communication and Design, and Zheng Yaqin, senior journalist at the news center of Guangdong Television, were invited as the keynote speakers. Associate Professor Zhang Zhian delivered a speech on “Microblog Communication and the Responsibility of Journalists”. He introduced the attributes, mechanism and characteristics of the new media, microblog, and analyzed its effect on news production in simple terms. Through multiple examples, he illustrated the issue of journalistic norms and accountability awareness during journalists’ use of Microblog. Journalist ZhengYaqin made a speech entitled “On the Scene, Are You Ready?—My Journalistic Experience and Thoughts”. By telling the stories behind four pieces of news she shared with the students her experience and thoughts gained from her eight years of work at the frontline of TV production, and talked about the impact of news media and the hardship of media work. She hoped that from her stories the student editors and journalists could grasp the sense of social responsibility that a media worker should have. The seminar, rich in content and humorous in language, greatly inspired the student editors and journalists.

The team quality improvement activities

After the seminar, the participating teachers and students headed for Qingyuan for team quality improvement training. The rich and fun training activities not only fostered the students' ability to cooperate and coordinate but also strengthened exchanges among student editors and journalists.
