On January 16-17, the 8th SYSU Teaching Skills Competition for Clinical Faculty, the 2013 Academic Year Clinical Skills Competition for Interns and the 2013 Academic Year SYSU Clinical Teaching Base Conference, sponsored by the Dean’s Office of Medical Education Affairs and co-organized by the Clinical Skills Training Center, Network and Information Technology Center, and Zhongshan School of Medicine, were held on North Campus.
Prof. Li Mengfeng, Vice President of SYSU, addressed the opening ceremony. He said that the annual teaching skills competition plays a positive role in carrying forward the “Three Basics and Three Stricts” tradition of medical education at SYSU. The competition involves affiliated hospitals, non-directly affiliated hospitals and teaching hospitals, and promotes the medical teaching activities at SYSU.

Prof. Chi Baorong, Chief Judge of National Medical College Students Clinical Skills Competition, affirmed SYSU’s achievements in medical education: SYSU has ranked among top three in the examination for the qualifications of medical practitioners for eight consecutive years and has won three consecutive championships in National Medical College Students Clinical Skills Competition. She thinks that such honors demonstrate SYSU’s strengths in the following four aspects: first, the university leadership attaches great importance to teaching; second, the university has a capable teaching administration team; third, the university has a high quality, high level faculty team made up of senior, middle-aged and young teachers; fourth, the medical students are autonomous and diligent in learning.
The chief judges of the two competitions were Prof. Liang Lijian, National Distinguished Teacher, Prof. Tang Meian and Prof. Zhu Zhaohua, medical education supervisors. The expert group consisted of professors from the affiliated hospitals. 18 faculty teams and 14 student teams took part in the two competitions on the competition sites, while the competitions were live broadcast and commented on the watching sites. Therefore, the competitions became teaching activities, integrating information technology into the whole process of medical education, promoting teaching and learning through competitions.

After the two-day fierce competition and strict review by the judges, the awards of the two competitions came out. According to the rule, the winning unit of each award won the corresponding organization award and instructor award at the same time. At the award ceremony, winners of Ye Rengao and Li Youji Couple Clinical Medicine Award for Outstanding Young and Middle-Aged Teachers, Outstanding Contribution Award for Supervisors, Excellent Clinical Teachers, Excellent Adjunct Clinical Teachers, Excellent Clinical Teaching Administrators, and Excellent Teaching Staff were also awarded for their contributions to the cultivation of medical talents.
Chen Ruzhu, Former Vice President of SYSU; Xia Dan, Secretary of Faculty of Medical Sciences; Prof. Wang Tinghuai, Deputy Director of Faculty of Medical Sciences and National Distinguished Teacher; Xiao Haipeng, Director of the Dean’s Office of Medical Education Affairs; Zhou Huiming, Wang Shuzhen and Wang Jinsong, Deputy Directors of the Dean’s Office of Medical Education Affairs; the vice presidents in charge of teaching from affiliated hospitals, non-directly affiliated hospitals and teaching hospitals; medical education supervisor group and expert group attended the opening ceremony and made an inspection tour of the competition sites and the broadcast sites. Teachers and administrative staff from 16 universities nationwide, teacher representatives from 33 SYSU teaching hospitals, clinical medicine interns who were enrolled in 2009 and 2010, and teacher representatives from hospitals across Guangdong province, a total of over 1,200 people watched the competitions.
