The 2018 Autumn Work Conference of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) opened on Zhuhai Campus on October 13. Centering on the theme of “strengthening school and department construction to realize the university’s strategic goals”, the conference was geared toward gathering consensus of faculty members and students to promote intensive development, and strive toward realizing the goal of building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics. Members of the university leadership, heads of schools, functional departments and affiliated hospitals, teacher representatives including various leading academics and researchers and committee members, as well as student representatives attended the conference.

In the morning, Secretary Chen Chunsheng delivered a special report entitled “Implement the Spirit of the National Education Conference, Strengthen the Overall Party Leadership, and Ensure Steady and Far-Reaching Development of the University Cause”. He put forward the requirement to carefully study and implement the spirit of the National Education Conference, and give top priority to studying and understanding General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important remarks on education. The university must strengthen, improve and implement Party building, ideological, and political work. The university will proceed from the systems and mechanisms, take a series of concrete measures to realize the goal of “nurturing students who have both ability and moral integrity, able to cultivate charisma, and eager to serve their country”, enhance the ability in ideological work, and ensure a steady and far-reaching development of the university cause.

In the afternoon, President Luo Jun delivered a keynote report entitled “Focus on Intensive Development, Strengthen School and Department Construction to Realize the University’s Strategic Goals, and Open up New Prospects for World-Class University Construction”. He pointed out that from the perspective of the development practice in the past three years, SYSU has achieved an intensive leap-forward in development, reached a new historical starting point, and entered a new era of development.
President Luo Jun stressed that the university should grasp the important opportunity of the “Double First-Class” Initiative and the advantageous situation in the new era, align goals with the new spirits and new requirements of the CPC Central Committee, and formulate plans for the reform and development in the next three years. By 2021, the university will strive to stay in the first-tier of universities nationwide, among the several Chinese universities that will enter the rank of world-class universities, and make notable progress in the first round of evaluation of the “Double First-Class” construction.
President Luo Jun pointed out that “strengthening school and department construction to realize the university’s strategic goals” is a new mode of management which is suitable for the university’s development, and an important path for the university to realize its intensive development in the new era. With safeguarding the completeness and unity of the university as the fundamental principle, with development and plan as the premises, with the division of rights and responsibilities as the focus, with resource allocation as the key, and with the university’s evaluation of the schools and departments as the core, this mode will further improve the internal governance capability of the university and ensure a steady and far-reaching development of the university cause. At the end of the report, President Luo Jun encouraged all faculty, staff and students to keep pace with the times, be brave enough to explore and innovate, strive toward the goal of becoming a world-class university, and join hands to create a brilliant future for SYSU!
In the evening, Vice President Wang Xuehua delivered a report on promoting the university through strengthening schools and departments. He presented the guiding principles and goals of the university’s systems and mechanisms on personnel and talent development, as well as the reform measures and work achievements.
After the meeting, the representatives held discussions in eight groups.
