On October 24-31, 2018, Professor Luo Jun, President of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), visited the United States and Japan to deepen SYSU’s substantial cooperation with world-class universities including University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and Hokkaido University. He also attended the forum on “Gathering Consensus for Development” and the 94th anniversary celebration of SYSU hosted by SYSU Alumni Association of Southern California, as well as an event celebrating the 4th anniversary of the establishment of SYSU Alumni Association of Japan. The visit achieved fruitful results.

On October 25, President Luo Jun visited UCLA and met with UCLA Chancellor Gene Block. The two sides introduced their university and recent development respectively, and discussed plans to conduct student exchanges, joint educational programs and research collaborations in the areas such as physics and astronomy, medical sciences, public health, life sciences, chemistry, earth sciences, and intelligent systems engineering. They reached consensus to promote the signing of a memorandum of cooperation and to lay a solid foundation for deep-level cooperation.

On October 26, President Luo Jun visited UCSB and met with UCSB Chancellor Henry T. Yang. With increasing short-term exchanges between SYSU and UCSB in recent years, the two universities are making efforts to accelerate the signing of a memorandum of cooperation with the hope to conduct student exchanges, joint educational programs and research collaborations in the fields of physics and astronomy, environmental sciences, chemistry, earth sciences, and computer science.
President Luo Jun Meeting with Hokkaido University President Toyoharu Nawa
On October 30, President Luo Jun visited Hokkaido University and met with President Toyoharu Nawa, Executive Vice President Masanori Kasahara, and representatives from Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Medicine. President Toyoharu Nawa introduced Hokkaido University and its advantageous disciplines. He highly appreciated SYSU’s rapid development in recent years and expressed the hope to sign a memorandum of cooperation between the two universities. Through the meeting, the two sides reached initial intention of cooperation in the areas of public health, chemistry, and international relations.
During the visit, President Luo Jun also met with Professor William A. Covino, President of California State University, Los Angeles, and discussed the possibility of cooperation in medical sciences and life sciences between the two universities.
For a long time, SYSU has actively explored cooperation and exchange with renowned universities in the United States and Japan. At present, SYSU has established university level cooperative relations with 36 universities in the United States, and signed university level cooperation agreements with 22 universities in Japan.
In order to strengthen substantial cooperation with world-class universities, a high level cooperative partner delegation, composed of representatives from SYSU’s Sixth Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Zhongshan School of Medicine, School of Public Health (Shenzhen), School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Shenzhen), School of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of Intelligent Systems Engineering, School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, School of Public Health, School of International Relations, School of Chemistry, School of Atmospheric Sciences, held talks with representatives in their academic fields from foreign universities during the university level visit. In addition, the delegation also attended the talent recruitment meetings organized by SYSU’s Talent Development Office and held concurrently in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Tokyo.
