Recently, in order to accelerate the “double first-class” development and explore rapid growth mode of new engineering, Professor Luo Jun, President of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), visited Belgium and Germany to promote SYSU’s cooperation and exchanges with Ghent University, RWTH Aachen University, Technical University of Munich (TUM), and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit?t München (LMU Munich), which are among the top 100 universities in the world. And fruitful results have been achieved.

President Luo Jun met with Professor Rik Van de Walle, Rector of Ghent University.

On June 11th, President Luo Jun visited Ghent University in Belgium. He met with Professor Rik Van de Walle, Rector of Ghent University, as well as representatives from the Faculty of Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The two sides presented an introduction to their university and recent development respectively, and expressed the hope to strengthen collaborations in the future in medicine, geography, environmental science, materials science, artificial intelligence, computer, physics, etc.

On June 13th, President Luo Jun visited Technical University of Munich (TUM), and met with Prof. Juliane Winkelmann, Senior Vice President for International Alliances and Alumni of TUM, as well as representatives from the Department of Civil, Geo and Environmental Engineering, the Department of Informatics, and the School of Medicine. The two sides agreed that with similar academic strengths and frequent exchanges, SYSU and TUM have great cooperation potential in the fields of medicine, environmental science, materials science, artificial intelligence, big data, computer, new materials, physics and astronomy. At the meeting, the two sides signed a university level Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further consolidate and deepen substantial cooperation. During the visit, SYSU medical delegation also visited the TUM School of Medicine and the TUM Center for Translational Cancer Research, and held discussions on relevant research progress.

President Luo Jun visited the Leibniz Supercomputing Center, the largest supercomputing center in Germany.

President Luo Jun also visited Leibniz Supercomputing Center, the largest supercomputing center in Germany and adjacent to TUM, and discussed with Professor Dieter Kranzimueller, Director of the Leibniz Supercomputing Center, on sustainable cooperation and development mode between international supercomputing centers and universities, as well as exchanges and cooperation in supercomputing application and education.

President Luo Jun signed the MoU with Prof. Dr. Bernd Huber, President of LMU.

On June 14th, President Luo Jun visited LMU Munich, and met with Prof. Dr. Bernd Huber, President of LMU, and representatives from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Physics. The two sides reached consensus on deepening cooperation in medicine, big data, artificial intelligence, computer, new materials and environmental science. In 2014, SYSU and LMU Munich signed a university level MoU. During this visit, the two universities signed an MoU on academic networking building, aiming at fostering closer and deeper bilateral cooperation and exchange in more academic fields.

Focusing on new engineering disciplines’ development, this visit expands our partnerships with four world-class universities with first-class disciplines in Europe, laying a good foundation for taking SYSU’s engineering disciplines into the forefront of the world . In the future, we will intensify cooperation in faculty and student exchanges, talent cultivation, joint construction of innovation research platforms, etc.

SYSU has a long history of cooperation with universities in Europe. At present, SYSU has established cooperation partnerships with more than 70 universities in Europe.
