Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Queensland Deborah Terry AO Visited SYSU

On March 29, a delegation from the University of Queensland (UQ) visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Members of the delegation included Professor Deborah Terry AO, the Vice-Chancellor and President, and Mr. Rongyu Li, Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

SYSU President Gao Song met with the guests in the VIP room of Zhongshan Building on Guangzhou South Campus. Representatives from the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Psychology, School of Tourism Management, School of Advanced Energy, Office of Education Administration, and Office of International Cooperation & Exchange attended the meeting.

President Gao Song extended a warm welcome to the guests and introduced the campuses, faculties, advantageous disciplines and future development focus of SYSU. He emphasized that the two sides have visited each other frequently and achieved fruitful results since the first memorandum of cooperation was signed in 2006. In the future, both sides will deepen cooperation in tourism management, medicine and pharmacy, and go beyond to collaboration in other disciplines, such as psychology and new engineering.

President Deborah Terry expressed her gratitude for the hospitality of SYSU and introduced the basic information of UQ. She said that the two universities have a long history of cooperation and have built close friendship, which could be exemplified by the exchange of students and faculty, joint training, joint seminars, and research collaborations. She expected the two sides to deepen understanding of each other and consolidate the partnership through her visit, so as to promote broader and deeper exchanges and cooperation in education and research.

After the meeting, the two sides held a signing ceremony for the Joint Training and Dual-Degree Program in Tourism, Hotel and Exhibition Management. President Gao Song, Professor Xu Honggang, Dean of School of Tourism Management, President Deborah Terry and Vice President Rongyu Li signed the agreement on behalf of the two sides respectively.

Later, the delegation attended a seminar with representatives from Faculty of Medicine, Department of Psychology, School of Advanced Energy, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, The Third Affiliated Hospital of SYSU, and the Office of International Cooperation & Exchange. The meeting was hosted by Professor Song Erwei, Director of Faculty of Medicine and President of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital. Representatives from both sides had an in-depth exchange and reached consensus in multiple aspects.

The University of Queensland is a comprehensive university in Australia founded in 1910. It's ranked 50th in the QS World University Rankings 2023. It enjoys competitive edge in multiple disciplines, such as biology, clinical medicine, public health, engineering, environmental science, chemistry, physics, archaeology, psychology, economics, law, business, management, services and tourism. SYSU and UQ first signed a university-level memorandum of cooperation in 2006.
