Celebrations were held by Faculty of Medical Sciences and the School of Nursing on November 10, 2013 on North Campus to commemorate the 100th anniversary of nursing education at Sun Yat-sen University and the 15th anniversary of the foundation of the School of Nursing. Celebrations included three parts: the Celebration Meeting, International Clinical Nursing and Nursing Education Forum, and celebration performances.
"To Youth" performed by students of the School of Nursing
The Celebration Meeting was held in Alumni Hall on North Campus at 3 pm in the afternoon. Zheng Detao, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, Li Mengfeng, SYSU Vice President and Director of Faculty of Medical Sciences, Liao Xinbo, Deputy Director of Guangdong Health and Family Planning Commission, Liu Chunyan, President of Nursing Education Society of National Higher Medical Education Society, deans of schools of nursing from 16 universities, renowned scholars in nursing profession, alumni, retired staff and faculty and students of School of Nursing of SYSU attended the meeting. The Celebration Meeting was chaired by Zhang Yuanquan, Secretary of School of Nursing of SYSU.
Secretary Zheng Detao, Deputy Director Liao Xinbo and President Liu Chunyan acknowledged the history and achievements of SYSU’s School of Nursing, stressed the importance of nursing in modern health care, and set out their vision for the future of the School of Nursing and the nursing profession.
Xie Wen, Dean of School of Nursing, delivered a speech. He looked back at the one hundred year history of SYSU nursing education, listed outstanding achievements of the School in talent cultivation and research innovation, expressed fellow nursing professionals’ determination and courage to “seize the trend and take the responsibility”, and set out his vision for the School’s future. Prof. Guo Guifang, Dean of Peking University School of Nursing, also gave a speech. The Chinese Nursing Association and various circles of society sent their best wishes in telegrams and letters. As an alumni representative, Xiao Ping, head nurse of the First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU and National Outstanding Female Worker, recounted her times at SYSU and expressed her gratitude to the alma mater. She also encouraged current students to do their best and serve the society.
The International Clinical Nursing and Nursing Education Forum was held in the morning. The three speakers were Prof. Chan Wai Chi from Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of National University of Singapore, Prof. Guo Guifang, Dean of Peking University School of Nursing, and Prof. Chao Co-Shi from the Department of Nursing of National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. Prof. Chan Wai Chi introduced the goals and methods of modern nursing education and the current situation of nursing education in Singapore. Prof. Guo Guifang talked about the fast development of nursing education in China and the challenges imposed on nursing professionals by lack of resources. She also introduced the traditional concept in Peking University School of Nursing — “To Know” to gain knowledge, “To Do” to cultivate abilities, and “To Practise” to become a true professional. Prof. Chao Co-Shi, known as the “Mother of Peaceful Care in Taiwan” demonstrated the significance of a caring heart to patients and their families by her own experiences. Audiences included faculty and students from SYSU School of Nursing and nurses and nursing professionals from the affiliated hospitals. They learnt the differences between domestic and overseas nursing education, and the trend for future nursing education. Inspired by the three speakers, they were determined to pursue their career in the nursing profession.
The Celebration Meeting was followed by performances given by faculty and students of the School of Nursing and nursing professionals from eight affiliated hospitals of SYSU. “To Youth”, prepared by the School of Nursing, showed the life of SYSU nursing students to audiences in the form of sit-com, arousing resonance from students and alumni. The performances were concluded by the “Song of Chinese Nurses” by all head nurses from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center.
The celebration events came to a close. We believe that SYSU nursing education will carry forward the good tradition and strive for a better future!
