At the invitation of the Ministry of Health of Vanuatu and the Ministry of Health of Samoa, organized by Guangdong Provincial Foreign Affairs Office and Guangdong Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission, and led by Mr. Xu Qingfeng, Director of the Division of Medical Administration of Guangdong Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center sent a medical team to the two Pacific island countries to carry out the “Bright Action” tour.
Professor Chen Weirong, Director of Cataract Department of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, is the team leader and chief expert, and the team members include Associate Professor Zhang Xinyu, Head Nurse Tang Jinzhu, Doctor Li Meng and Nurse Chen Aihuan. Considering the poor medical conditions in local eye clinics where there are no conditions for cataract surgery, the medical team prepared 14 boxes of medical equipment and devices and went to the two countries to offer medical consultation and cataract surgery from November 15 to 23, 2013.

During the short medical tour in the two countries, the medical team provided medical consultation for a total of 104 patients, performed phacoemulsification with foldable intraocular lens implantation on 13 patients, and donated medical devices and medicine worth more than 600,000 yuan to the people and hospitals of the two countries.
This “Bright Action” tour has gained satisfactory success. The excellent medical skills, high work efficiency and dedication of the Chinese doctors are praised by local hospitals and local people, and covered by the local media, thus accomplishing the mission of medical diplomacy successfully. Through this assistance, the China-Vanuatu friendship and the China-Samoa friendship are enhanced and consolidated, the excellent medical skills of Chinese doctors are demonstrated, and the international influence of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center is expanded.
