As summer came, the air was full of the fragrance of magnolia flowers, and with this fragrance we ushered in the festival which belongs to us: “International Nurses Day”.
To carry forward the spirit of Florence Nightingale and showcase the progressive trend and internationalization of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, as well as the elegant demeanor of the nurses, an English speaking contest was held on the afternoon of April 29th, 2015. It was jointly hosted by the Nursing Department, Labour Union, International Exchange & Cooperation Office and Youth Association of the Center.
English speaking contest held in Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center to celebrate International Nurses Day
The event was attended by Yunhua Pan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Yehong Zhuo, Assistant to the Dean and the Director of the Medical Department, and Xiaosong Liang, Secretary of the Youth Association of the Center.
Jiawei Wang, Director of the International Exchange & Cooperation Office, Lingyi Liang, Corneal Disease Specialist, Haotian Lin, Pediatric Cataract Specialist, and foreign teacher Philip were invited to be the judges of the contest.
Each contestant gave a speech lasting no more than 8 minutes on the topic of “My patient and I”. The contestants expressed the different experiences and feelings through their work as nurses and their interactions with patients.
Titles of the speeches given included “To be an angel”, “Being grateful”, “The power of responsibility”, etc., and all were highly praised by the judges and the audience. Successful contestants were recognized with “Best Eloquence Award”, "Outstanding Quality Award”, "Best Creativity Award” and “Excellence Award”.
The contest not only showed the elegance of the nurses but also stimulated enthusiasm for learning English and building a positive cultural atmosphere within the hospital. As Associate Professor Lingyi Liang said: “Nursing is no longer just a job, it’s a career and an art.” As nurses, we should always be grateful, positive and hard-working, so that our profession is filled with love and warmth.
