On the afternoon of September 7, 2015, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital (SYSH) of Sun Yat-sen University hosted the first medical internship graduation ceremony for the students from University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE). Prof. Song Erwei, vice president of SYSH, Prof. Liu Chao, deputy director of Sun Yat-sen University’s Bureau of Affiliated Hospitals Administration, and Prof. Liu Qiang, director of the hospital’s International Office attended the ceremony. The representatives of the hospital’s education and accommodation administration offices as well as the medical tutors for the internship were also invited.
During the ceremony, Prof. Song Erwei first congratulated the UDE students on excellently completing their one-month internship at the hospital. He then shared his study experience in Germany and asked about their stay in Guangzhou. He stressed that under the new collaborative framework with UDE, it’s crucially important to strengthen the collaboration on nurturing international medical talents. He welcomed more UDE students to visit SYSH for medical training in the future, and listened to the students’ suggestions for improvement of the project. In the end, the visiting students were granted with the internship graduation certificates.

In June, 2014, SYSH signed a collaboration agreement with UDE to carry out projects for academic exchanges, scientific researches and talent training, where the medical internship in Guangzhou was included. On August 10, 2015, four 3rd grade medical students from UDE came to Guangzhou and carried on the 4-week internship at SYSH. The training departments were the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the Department of Orthopedics and the Breast Tumor Center. Under the tutorship of the professors and senior doctors at the hospital, the students checked on the in-patient wards, analyzed cases, observed surgeries and practiced medical techniques. They also paid a one-day study visit to the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and learned about the Chinese traditional techniques of acupuncture and cupping.
Thanks to the guidance by their tutors, the students were able to reinforce their knowledge on medical theories, enhance their ability for clinical practice, and compare the differences between western medicine and Chinese medicine. With the coming of the hospital’s 180th Anniversary, the successful holding of the first medical internship program for UDE students displays the hospital’s international strength in clinical training, furthers its international influence on medical exchanges, and lays a solid foundation for future projects on scientific collaboration and high-end talent training. Moreover, the internship program encourages effective exchanges between both universities and provides an ideal platform to explore university-level collaboration in broader fields.
