On December 18-19, 2016, Dr. Victor J. Dzau, President of the National Academy of Medicine of the United States, visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and became a guest of International Master Forum at the invitation of Dr. Tianxin Yang, Director of Institute of Hypertension at Zhongshan School of Medicine (ZSSOM) under the sponsorship of the Distinguished Lectureship grant offered by the Office of International Cooperation & Exchange of SYSU. During this visit, Prof. Mengfeng Li, Vice President of SYSU and Dean of ZSSOM, some members of the Institute of Hypertension of SYSU and of ZSSOM accompanied Dr. Dzau to visit the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou on SYSU’s Guangzhou East Campus, the Library on Guangzhou South Campus, the Museum of Medical Specimen and the Institute of Hypertension on Guangzhou North Campus.
On the morning of December 19, the International Master Forum was held in the Medical Science and Technology Building on Guangzhou North Campus. Dr. Dzau delivered a lecture entitled "Bench to Bedside to Policy: A Journey of Innovation". The forum was hosted by Prof. Mengfeng Li, Vice President of SYSU and Dean of ZSSOM.

At the forum, Dr. Dzau not only shared his scientific research progress, but also displayed his magnificent plan to promote global human health care. The attending teachers and students learned about the frontier scientific topics, the cutting-edge research methods and the innovative scientific thinking, as well as the social responsibility and mission of the times of a distinguished medical researcher. Dr. Dzau indicated that hot innovative fields in medical science included precision medicine, regenerative medicine, 3D printing, tissue engineering and big data analysis, which pointed out the development direction of medical research in the future. In addition, the legendary and inspiring life of Dr. Dzau left a deep impression on the audience.
Dr. Victor J. Dzau graduated from School of Medicine at McGill University, Canada in 1972, and he got his PhD degree both from School of Medicine at McGill University and King's College London. He was elected as an academician of Institute of Medicine in the United States in 1998, and then academician of Academia Sinica in 2000. Dr. Dzau successively held the post of Chair of the NIH Cardiovascular Disease Advisory Committee, Hersey Professor of Harvard School of Medicine, Dean of the Division of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dean of the Division of Medicine at Stanford University as well as President of School of Medicine at Duke University. Dr. Dzau serves as the President of National Academy of Medicine in the United States since 2014, and at the same time he acts as President of Duke University Health Institute, President and CEO of Duke University Health System, and the James B. Duke Professor of Medicine. The major academic contribution of Dr. Dzau is the discovery of ACE inhibitors, and he also has active work on stem cells and myocardial repair in recent years. Dr. Dzau is also a precursor of translational medicine, and he pioneered the use of DNA inducer to prevent gene transcription and gene therapy for vascular disease.
The visit of Dr. Victor J. Dzau not only sets up a high-level academic exchange platform for the development of medical research in our university, but also will promote the development of the related medical disciplines.
