China News Agency, Guangzhou reported On the evening of November 14, Carnegie Mellon University signed a cooperation agreement with Guangzhou Municipal Government, Sun Yat-sen University and Foshan Shunde District Government respectively, the four sides would join hands to build an Institute of Engineering.

The Cooperation Agreement stipulated that the two universities would co-establish the “Sun Yat-sen University- Carnegie Mellon University Joint Institute of Engineering”, and its affiliate “Electrical and Computer Engineering School”. In addition, Carnegie Mellon University would build “Guangdong Shunde SYSU- Carnegie Mellon University International Joint Research Institute”.

Choosing SYSU as its important strategic partner, , Carnegie Mellon University would accelerate the development and technological research and industrial upgrade of Pearl River Delta’s much-needed engineering disciplines, such as electrical and computer engineering, as well as promote its international influence, with the support of SYSU’s disciplines and talents advantage.
According to the agreement, from 2013, the Joint Institute of Engineering would provide Master and Doctor double degree education of electrical and computer engineering.

President Cohon of Carnegie Mellon University stated that SYSU is a very important strategic partner for them. He hoped to initiate a new era for China engineering education with SYSU, and expected to bring Carnegie Mellon University’s innovation style, technical expertise and creative problem-solving methods to this region.

Present Xu Ningsheng of SYSU said that the reason for choosing Carnegie Mellon University was its high reputation in academics and research, which corresponded to the talents’ cultivation needs for South China’s information technology and electronics industry development, especially for the new and high-end electronics industry and LED new industry.
