On July 18 and 19, the SYSU 2012 Summer Work Seminar was held in Foshan to discuss a number of key issues related to the reform and development of SYSU. Zheng Detao, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, and Xu Ningsheng, President of SYSU, delivered a thematic speech on cultivating good administrative culture and promoting dedication to academic studies respectively. Mr. Song Yonghua, Deputy Director of the Talent Bureau of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, gave a special report on the current situation of the talent work in China. All university leaders of SYSU, assistants to SYSU President, secretaries of second-level Party Committees, deans of schools, heads of departments, directors of functional departments, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, recipients of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, members of SYSU Academic Committee, SYSU Undergraduate Teaching Guidance Committee, SYSU Academic Degree Evaluation Committee and SYSU Teaching Post Allocation and Appointment Committee, professors, teachers and other specially invited persons, in total over 200 people attended the seminar.

President Xu Ningsheng delivered a speech entitled “Emancipate the Mind, Work and Pull Together, Promote Dedication to Academic Studies”, in which he expressed his opinion on how to promote dedication to academic studies from the three perspectives of evaluation mechanism, resource allocation mechanism, and management and operation mechanism. President Xu Ningsheng thinks that in order to encourage dedication to academic studies, it is necessary to update various evaluation mechanisms including teaching, research, and faculty and staff evaluation systems, and it is necessary to instill new ideas in the perfection and updating of evaluation mechanisms; in order to guide faculty members to dedicate themselves to academic studies, in resource allocation, we need to put emphasis on performance and give priority to young frontline teachers and those who have gained real achievements; in order to promote dedication to academic studies, the administration and management departments of the university should increase awareness of service, improve coordination and implementation, adapt to the mutual restriction and promotion mechanism. Finally, President Xu Ningsheng stressed that a modern university management system must have a good evaluation mechanism, resource allocation mechanism and operation mechanism, which can promote dedication to academic studies, develop positive attitudes, and form a cultural atmosphere of striving for excellence unceasingly. President Xu Ningsheng also informed the participants about the latest development in the talent work of SYSU and pointed out some issues in key administrative work that need our special attention.

The participants of the seminar also listened to the report on the development of the school or department given by Head of Department of Chinese, Dean of Information Management, Dean of Lingnan College, and Dean of School of Pharmaceutical Science respectively.

During the seminar, secretaries of second-level Party Committees, heads of schools, departments and functional departments held a thematic meeting. SYSU Academic Committee, SYSU Academic Degree Evaluation Committee, and SYSU Teaching Post Allocation and Appointment Committee held a joint meeting to discuss relevant issues and some rules and regulations. Deputy Director Song Yonghua had a discussion with SYSU professors recruited via Thousand Talents Program.
Secretary Zheng Detao thinks that it is both a requirement of the goals of SYSU and a cultural idea of SYSU to promote dedication to academic studies, develop positive attitudes and form a cultural atmosphere of striving for excellence unceasingly; to promote dedication to academic studies and develop positive attitudes, we need to start with the system and mechanism. Secretary Zheng Detao delivered a thematic speech entitled “Cultivate Good Administrative Culture, Strengthen and Improve Office Work Style”. He affirmed the good administrative cultural tradition that has been established in SYSU over the years, and the contributions made by administrative and managerial staff at all levels to the development of SYS. He pointed out the existing problems and emphasized that we should have adequate understanding of the importance and urgency of building good university administrative culture; be clear about the new requirements and carry out the key tasks in further strengthening and improving the construction of office work style. Finally, Secretary Zheng Detao stressed that the cultivation of good administrative culture and the construction of office work style is a long term undertaking of fundamental significance to the overall development of our university. In addition to good system design and its actual implementation, we should absorb nutrition from the long and excellent cultural tradition of SYSU. University management, especially the management of a university with a long history and excellent tradition, must not ignore or violate the university spirit and cultural characteristics. Therefore, in university management including office work, we should consciously respect and drawn on our academic tradition and university culture, and hold our culture and tradition in awe and veneration.
