On the morning of September 26th, the Signing Ceremony of the Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement between Sun Yat-sen University and Administration of Ocean and Fisheries of Guangdong Province was held on SYSU South Campus. Liu Kun, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province, Zheng Weiyi, Director-General of Administration of Ocean and Fisheries of Guangdong Province (GDOFA), Chen Liangyao, Qu Jiashu and Hong Weidong, Deputy Directors of GDOFA, Gao Qingying, Political Commissar of Fishery Administration (Marine Surveillance) Corps of Guangdong Province, Xu Ningsheng, President of SYSU, Li Mengfeng, Xu Anlong, Wei Minghai, Vice Presidents of SYSU, Xia Lianghui, Assistant to the President, officials of relevant departments from both sides and professors, a total of over 70 people attended the signing ceremony. Director-General Zheng Weiyi and President Xu Ningsheng signed the agreement on behalf of both sides.

Vice Governor Liu Kun pointed out in his speech that with SYSU’s predominant advantages in disciplines and talents, the cooperation between GDOFA and SYSU will promote the development of the marine cause of Guangdong Province. He encouraged both sides to implement strategic cooperation together, and expected SYSU to make more contribution to the development of Guangdong marine economy.

President Xu Ningsheng introduced SYSU’s long history and strong faculty in marine research in his speech. He said that SYSU has attached great importance to the research and discipline development in the field of marine science. A set of scientific research bases related to the marine discipline at national, provincial and ministerial level have been established to undertake major and key research projects from the country, province and cities, and they have gained fruitful achievements in marine scientific research, which have been applied in Vietnam, the Philippines and other countries. President Xu requested relevant schools and researchers to aim at solving the practical problems of Guangdong marine economy and science, and carry out the cooperation with GDOFA.

Director-General Zheng Weiyi reviewed the close collaboration between both sides in the past, and fully affirmed the results achieved. He said that Guangdong is a major marine province and its total marine production value has taken the lead nationwide for 17 consecutive years. The “Develop Plan of Guangdong Marine Economy Comprehensive Experimental Zone” approved by the State Council marked that the development of Guangdong marine economy has been raised to a level of national strategy. GDOFA will put efforts into building up a more comprehensive cooperative relationship with SYSU.

The signing of the agreement marked that GDOFA and SYSU will establish a deeper cooperative relationship in the areas of marine economy development, marine management policy studies, library of marine organisms, natural products and compounds, advanced innovation platform for marine science and technology, marine technology R&D and talent cultivation, and jointly promote the construction of Guangdong as a strong province in marine economy.
