The grand opening ceremony of “Sun Yat-sen University Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center Hainan Provincial Ophthalmic Hospital” and Hainan Provincial Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Hospital (also named as “Sun Yat-sen University Hainan Provincial Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Hospital”) was held in Haikou City, Hainan Province on the morning of December 22, 2012. The two hospitals are entrusted by the People’s Government of Hainan Province with the former managed by Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center and the latter technically supported by the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Lin Fanglue, Vice Governor of Hainan Province; Wang Yu, Director of the Medical Administration Department of the Ministry of Health; Xu Ningsheng, President of SYSU; Wang Jiangping, Executive Vice President of SYSU; Li Ping, Deputy Secretary of SYSU; Bai Zhiqin, Director of the Department of Health of Hainan Province; Han Yingwei, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of Department of Health of Hainan Province; Xing Liyuan, Chairman of Hong Kong Yan’ai Fund; Yan Churong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU, Liu Yizhi, Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center; Yu Minbin, Secretary of the Party Committee of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center; relevant persons in charge and other guests attended the ceremony. The opening ceremony was presided over by Feng Ming, Deputy Secretary-General of Hainan Provincial People's Government.
Chen Zhu, Minister of the Ministry of Health, attached great importance to the medical and health cooperation between the People’s Government of Hainan Province and Sun Yat-sen University, and extended congratulations and thanks to SYSU especially for the cooperation projects. At the ceremony, Director Wang Yu read out Director Chen Zhu’s congratulatory letter to the audience, and expressed warm congratulations on the completion and official opening of these two specialized hospitals.

Vice Governor Lin Fanglue pointed out in his address that the two specialized hospitals jointly established by the People’s Government of Hainan Province and Sun Yat-sen University were one of the 2012 Top Ten Projects Concerning People’s Livelihood of Hainan Province in implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development and doing useful things for people. They will effectively improve the quality of medical care in ophthalmology and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery in Hainan Province and provide first-class medical services for over 9 million people across the province, greatly promoting the construction of Hainan International Tourism Island.

President Xu Ningsheng stated in his address that the medical and health cooperation between the People’s Government of Hainan Province and Sun Yat-sen University was an exploration and attempt in public hospital reform and mode of running hospitals, and also a key work for SYSU to serve the society and people. SYSU will give full play to its advantages in technology, talents, medical resources and other aspects to enhance the radiation effect of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center and the technical support of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Department of the First Affiliated Hospital, earnestly implement the new requirements of the 18th CPC National Congress to pay close attention to the well-being of the people, coordinate with the People’s Government of Hainan Province to construct a first-class ophthalmic hospital in the nation, drive the development of ophthalmology and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery technology in Hainan Province, improve the International Tourism Island’s capabilities of health services, and practically provide high-quality specialized medical services for Hainan people and tourists at home and abroad.
On July 5, 2012, the People’s Government of Hainan Province and Sun Yat-sen University signed a medical and health cooperation framework agreement. According to the bilateral agreement, the People’s Government of Hainan Province entrusts Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of SYSU with operations management of the newly established Hainan Provincial Ophthalmic Hospital, which is also named as “Sun Yat-sen University Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center Hainan Provincial Ophthalmic Hospital”, with the development aim of constructing a third-grade class-A ophthalmic hospital within four years, unceasingly improving the medical treatment and scientific research level of ophthalmology in Hainan Province, and providing high-quality and professional ophthalmological services for Hainan people; the People’s Government of Hainan Province also entrusts the First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU with technical support for the newly established Hainan Provincial Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Hospital. The First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU will provide technology and talent support by sending technical backbones to offer all-round support including medical technology, nursing technology, scientific research and teaching in order to enhance the level of medical treatment, scientific research and teaching in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery in Hainan Province.

Sun Yat-sen University Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center Hainan Provincial Ophthalmic Hospital is jointly constructed with investment from the People’s Government of Hainan Province and donations from Hong Kong Yan’ai Fund. Located in Xiuying District, Haikou City, with a construction area of over 13,000 square meters, the hospital currently has 100 staff members and 150 hospital beds with advanced equipment and beautiful environment. After the opening ceremony concluded, tens of ophthalmic experts from well-known institutions of ophthalmological treatment and scientific research across China, who were invited by Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of SYSU, gathered together in Haikou to hold a national academic symposium on ophthalmology, discussing academic frontiers in ophthalmology and sharing newest scientific achievements of medical treatment. On the afternoon of the same day, over 20 experts of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of SYSU organized a free medical consultation for patients with eye diseases.
