Delegation of Nanyang Technological University and Technical University of Munich Visited SYSU

On the morning of January 31, an eleven-member delegation led by Professor Lam Khin Yong, Chief of Staff and Chief Executive Officer (NTU Innovation) at Nanyang Technological University, and Meng Liqiu, Vice President of Technical University of Munich, visited Sun Yat-sen University. Members of the delegation also included representatives of Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Investment & Development Co., Ltd and Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Administration Committee.

President Xu Ningsheng and Assistant President Xia Lianghui met with the delegation in the VIP room of Zhongshan Building. Ling Wenhua, Director of the Office of International Cooperation & Exchange; Wang Biao, Dean of School of Physics & Engineering, Zhan Jiemin, Deputy Dean of School of Engineering; Wu Zhongdao, Deputy Dean of Zhongshan School of Medicine; Liu Xianguo, Deputy Dean of Zhongshan School of Medicine; and Zhang Jun, Deputy Dean of School of Information Science and Technology, also attended the meeting.

President Xu Ningsheng extended a warm welcome to the delegation and gave an introduction to SYSU’s predominant disciplines and Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run institutions. The delegation introduced TUM CREATE, a research project jointly conducted by NTU and TUM. The project is funded by Singapore’s National Research Fund with the aim to develop emerging technologies and future transportation, especially electric automobiles.

President Xu Ningsheng hoped that the three universities could draw on the mode of TUM CREATE and use the platform of Sino-Singapore Knowledge City to cooperate with each other in life sciences, information technology, creative industry, automobile industry, new energy and environmental protection. Moreover, the various sides held discussions and reached consensus on joint graduate programs, joint establishment of research institutions and scientific research collaborations.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was founded in 1981 and was at the time called Nanyang Polytechnic. In 1991 it was renamed as Nanyang Technological University. Within a brief 10 years, NTU was ranked among the top ten universities of science and technology in Asia. Technical University of Munich (TUM) is located in Munich, capital city of Bavaria, in the south of Germany. Since the modern time, TUM has been regarded as the best university in Germany. According to the rankings issued by world-famous organizations and magazines, TUM has stayed No.1 in Germany and among the top in the world.
