Minister for Education, Training and Employment of Queensland visited SYSU and gave a lecture at Lingnan College

Recently, an 8-member delegation led by Mr. John-Paul Langbroek, Minister for Education, Training and Employment of Queensland, Australia, visited SYSU. Professor Wei Minghai, Vice President of SYSU, met with the delegates in the VIP Lounge of Zhongshan Building. Professor Ling Wenhua, Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, was also present at the meeting.

Vice President Wei Minghai extended a warm welcome to the delegation and reviewed the exchanges between SYSU and Australian universities. He said that, SYSU hoped to have more extensive collaborations with Queensland not only in the field of education but also in the fields of enterprises and research institutions. He also put forward proposals for further cooperation.

Vice President Wei Minghai and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Scott Sheppard jointly signed a MOU.

Minister John-Paul Langbroek introduced higher education in Queensland and said that they expressed the hope to support and promote cooperation and exchange between SYSU and Queensland universities including Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

Professor Scott Sheppard, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Development) at QUT, introduced the exchanges between QUT and Chinese univerities. He hoped that on the basis of existing cooperation, QUT and SYSU could expand cooperation in other fields such as public health.

After the meeting, witnessed by Minister John-Paul Langbroek and representatives of both sides, Vice President Wei Minghai and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Scott Sheppard jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding between SYSU and QUT.

During the visit, Minister John-Paul Langbroek also gave a lecture entitled “Cultural connections = global opportunities” at Lingnan College. He introduced the status quo of economic, trade, investment and strategic cooperation between Australia and China. He also pointed out the opportunies and prospects for future cooperation and development.

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) was established in 1908. QUT has a strong focus on applied research and maintains close cooperative relations with the industrial sectors in Queensland. QUT’s predominant disciplines include business, education, information technology, law, etc. SYSU established exchange relations with QUT in 2009. In May, 2011, the two universities signed a university-level agreement on student exchange program. The Lingnan College of SYSU has long term cooperation with the QUT Business School in teacher visit and student exchange. In addition, School of Public Health, School of Education, School of Communication and Design, and School of Information Science and Technology are discussing collaborations with QUT in student and teacher visit, joint training program and scientific research.
