Professor Chen Xiaoming elected as Fellow of TWAS

The 24th TWAS General Meeting started in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 1 October, 2013 (local time). 52 new TWAS members were elected including 12 scientists from China. Professor Chen Xiaoming, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Sun Yat-sen University, was elected as Fellow of TWAS.

According to news in the website of TWAS (twas.ictp.it/mbrs/members-by-year/members-elected-2013), Professor Chen “has contributed to functional coordination chemistry and crystal engineering of coordination polymers, in particular, in hydrothermal/solvothermal in situ metal/ligand reactions and design, structures and functionally of metal-organic frameworks with real zeolite topologies and dynamic behaviours”.

It is learned that around 50 new members of TWAS are elected each year. Only TWAS members can nominate candidates for election. The nomination must be made in writing by two TWAS members. Completed "Certificates of Election" must be submitted to the TWAS Secretariat by 31 March of each year.

Brief Introduction to Academician Chen Xiaoming:

Professor Chen Xiaoming was born in 1961, Guangdong, China. He obtained his BSc (1983) and MSc (1986) degrees from Sun Yat-sen University, and PhD degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (1992) under the supervision of Professor Thomas C.W. Mak. After his graduation, he joined the chemistry faculty at Sun Yat-sen University in July 1992, and was promoted to full professor at the same university in 1995. He has received the TWAS 2012 Prize in Chemistry, the National Natural Science Award of China and two distinguished young scientist awards, among others. His current research interest is synthesis, structures and properties of functional coordination polymers and metal compounds, especially the porous and magnetic coordination materials. He has published 300 papers.
