On November 20-21, a delegation from Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis (IUPUI) and Indiana University (IU) visited SYSU. The delegation was led by Dr. Gil Latz, Associate Vice Chancellor for International Affairs of IUPUI, and the members included Gene Tempel, Founding Dean of Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, Paul Halverson, Founding Dean of Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, Lilliard Richardson, Executive Associate Dean of School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Philip Cochran, Executive Associate Dean of Kelley School of Business, Kenneth Carow, Associate Dean for Indianapolis Research and Programs of Kelley School of Business, and Prof. Joe Xu, Director of Confucius Institute at IUPUI.

The delegates hoped to strengthen cooperative relations with SYSU and make preparations for the Cooperative Development Committee meeting to be held in December.

Prof. Yan Guangmei, Vice President of SYSU, and Prof. Zhu Xiping, Vice President of SYSU, met with the delegates at different occasions. Prof. Wen Wushao, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, attended the meetings.

Vice President Zhu Xiping extended warm welcome to Associate Vice Chancellor Gil Latz, who is an old friend of SYSU and has made outstanding contribution to the collaborations between the two universities. He also introduced the campus construction and advantageous disciplines of SYSU to the delegates who came to SYSU for the first time.

Associate Vice Chancellor Gil Latz thanked SYSU for the warm reception and said that, as one of IUPUI’s most important partners in China, SYSU has a long history and has made impressive development in recent years. He hoped that the two universities will further deepen cooperation through the mechanism of Cooperative Development Committee.

The two sides discussed joint educational program, faculty exchange and administrative staff training and planned to co-host a concert at SYSU next year.

During the visit, the delegates also visited School of Philanthropy, Zhongshan School of Medicine, School of Public Health, The Third Affiliated Hospital, School of Business and School of Government, and held talks with relevant persons in charge.

Indiana University (IU) was established in 1820 and has 8 campuses including Bloomington campus and Indianapolis campus. IUPUI is an urban campus of Indiana University and Purdue University with acknowledged strength in medical sciences, business, engineering and information science. SYSU and IUPUI jointly set up the Confucius Institute in 2007 and then established strategic partnership to collaborate in joint undergraduate program, faculty exchange, etc. In 2008, SYSU and IU signed a medical student exchange agreement and started to exchange students majoring in clinical sciences.
