On December 7, the 4th SYSU Whampoa Forum was held at K. K. Leung Hall of Sun Yat-sen University. Harvard political philosopher Dr. Michael J. Sandel, one of the most popular professors worldwide, presented his speech on “Justice, Money and Markets” at the Forum, which marked his first lecture tour in China this year.

In his speech, Prof. Sandel argued with enthusiasm on macro topics of justice, moral ethics, etc. Interestingly, he distributed red and yellow cards to the audience and asked them to use the cards to state their positions on controversial questions like “Are hugs for sale?” “Is it allowed to buy and sell kidneys at free markets?” “Do you agree with cash incentives entering the education system?” "How do you judge scalpers?"

Discussing and debating together with the audience, Prof. Sandel pointed out that while money could evaluate assets and properties, injustice would be expanded when money is infiltrated into areas of education, health and legislation, to name just a few. 

The audience was charmed and enlightened by Prof. Sandel’s witty insights and vivid exemplifications. After the two-hour presentation, a crowd of fans queued up for the professor’s signature with enormous excitement.
