On June 23-25, 2015, Dr. Lincoln Chen, President of China Medical Board (CMB), visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). The purpose of this visit was to listen to the progress reports on CMB grants of SYSU, learn about SYSU’s plans and arrangements for CMB grants, and conduct a survey on postgraduate education.

Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, met with Dr. Lincoln Chen in Zhongshan Building on South Campus, accompanied by Prof. Li Mengfeng, Vice President of SYSU. Dr. Lincoln Chen introduced CMB and its plan for grants in the future. Prof. Luo Jun extended a warm welcome to Dr. Chen, and thanked CMB for its strong support for the medical development at SYSU. He also introduced SYSU’s present situation and development plan. The two sides exchanged opinions on the future development of SYSU’s medical sciences.

Dr. Lincoln Chen listened to the progress reports on CMB grants of SYSU in the Reception Room on North Campus. Principal investigators of the migrant health policy program, the global health program, the Moocs on biostatistics program, the integrated Methadone treatment program, the patient-doctor trust program, and the occupational health of migrant workers program reported on the progress of the programs respectively. Dr. Lincoln Chen affirmed the progress and offered valuable suggestions. He hoped that the university and the principal investigators would make continuous efforts to accomplish the programs. Afterwards, Dr. Lincoln Chen and Prof. Li Mengfeng held an in-depth discussion and reached consensus on the management of CMB grants of SYSU as well as the next program on postgraduate education.

As entrusted by CMB, the accompanying research team from The University of Hong Kong conducted a survey on postgraduate education at SYSU. Experts, scholars and administrators from Continuing Education Center of Zhongshan School of Medicine, Dean’s Office of Medical Education Affairs, Bureau of Affiliated Hospitals Administration, The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital and The Third Affiliated Hospital attended the meeting, and discussed the challenges for postgraduate education in China.

SYSU attendees also included Prof. Hao Yuantao, Dean of School of Public Health, Prof. Ling Wenhua, Director of Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, Ms. Gu Wenli, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, Prof. Wang Jinsong, Deputy Director of Dean’s Office of Medical Education Affairs, Associate Professor Wang Zongfang, Deputy Director of Bureau of Affiliated Hospitals Administration, and Associate Professor Wang Shaoxin, Director of Continuing Education Center of Zhongshan School of Medicine.

The China Medical Board (CMB) has been dedicated to advancing health in China and neighboring Asian countries through strengthening medical, nursing, and public health research and education. CMB's strategic grant-making is highly focused on targeted activities to advance its mission.

CMB was created by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1914 and became an independent foundation in 1928. It mainly funded the development of the Peking Union Medical College until 1950. In 1980, it resumed its activities in China.

Since 1983 SYSU has received more than 30 grants from CMB with over 10 million US dollars, covering medical education, medical research, public health, nursing education and talent training. These grants have greatly promoted SYSU’s medical disciplines construction and development, and created tremendous social benefits.
