President Luo Jun meets with Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Professor Jean-Marie Lehn

On November 20, 2015, Prof. Luo Jun, President of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), Prof. Wei Minghai, Vice President of SYSU, and Prof. Ma Jun, Vice President of SYSU, met with Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn, the French Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and Honorary Director of the Lehn Institute of Functional Materials (LIFM) of SYSU, in Zhongshan Building on the South Campus. Both parties discussed the development plan of the LIFM for the next stage and reached consensus. Prof. Lehn will soon renew the appointment contract with SYSU and continue to hold the position of Honorary Director of the LIFM in the next five years. He will continue to lead the Chinese and foreign PIs of the LIFM to develop the research teams and the international talent cultivation in the frontier fields.

Also present at the meeting were Prof. Chen Xiaoming, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the LIFM; Ms. Gu Xiaohong, Party Secretary of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; Prof. Su Chengyong, Deputy Director of the LIFM; Prof. Mihail-Dumitru Barboiu at the LIFM; Mr. Gao Jiuqun, Director of the Department of Development of Graduate School; Ms. Dong Meiling, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation in Research of Office of Scientific Research; Ms. Huang Weie, Deputy Director of Human Resources Development; and Ms. Xu Yao, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange.

The Lehn Institute of Functional Materials (LIFM) of SYSU was jointly established in 2010 by Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn, the French Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Prof. Dieter Fenske, Member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and Prof. Chen Xiaoming, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc. The LIFM was approved to be established in 2011 and started to operate officially in 2012. With the support from the University’s leadership, administration departments and the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the LIFM has now become an international research institute with high-level international research teams, advanced research instruments, steadily growing international education programs, active international cooperation and exchanges, and large domestic and international influence. It has greatly supported the development of Chemistry as well as Materials Science and Engineering, the First-Level disciplines, the application for the state key laboratories, and the implementation of major research plans such as the 973 Program. It has made important contributions to the University’s international ranking in Chemistry as well as introduction of talents to SYSU.
