On September 8, Hu Chunhua, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, inspected Zhuhai Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). He visited Academician Zhang Peizhen’s office, the School of Marine Sciences, and the construction site of the “Tianqin Plan”.

Jiang Ling, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and Secretary-General of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee; Huang Ningsheng, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province and Director General of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology; Jing Lihu, Director General of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province; Guo Yuanqiang, Secretary of the CPC Zhuhai Municipal Committee; Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee; Luo Jun, President of SYSU; and Yang Qinghua, Vice President of SYSU, attended the event.

Secretary Hu Chunhua listened to a report by Secretary Chen Chunsheng and President Luo Jun on the latest round of planning and construction of Zhuhai Campus, the introduction of high-level talents, and the deep sea and deep sky development strategy. Secretary Hu Chunhua praised the new development planning and objective of Zhuhai Campus. He encouraged SYSU to set higher goals to enter the top-tier of universities nationwide, and make greater contributions to the economic and social development of Zhuhai City and Guangdong Province.

Secretary Hu Chunhua came to Academician Zhang Peizhen’s office and asked about his work and study. Secretary Hu Chunhua pointed out that Guangdong is implementing an innovation-driven development strategy, and is in need of a batch of high quality talents like Academician Zhang Pengzhen to make contributions to Guangdong’s social and economic development. He also expressed his hope that SYSU would develop at a high starting point with a high standard, and produce high-quality talents, high-tech achievements and high-level research institutes.

Secretary Hu Chunhua visited the School of Marine Sciences, and listened to a report on the construction of the School’s comprehensive marine research fieldwork vessel, the exploration of mineral resources in the South China Sea, and the protection of Chinese white dolphins. He approved of SYSU’s idea to strengthen marine research, and hoped that the University would take more measures to gather high level innovative resources in the marine fields. He stressed the importance of strengthening ecological civilization construction and protecting marine environments with technology, and encouraged the University to make greater contributions in serving the national strategy for the South China Sea.

Secretary Hu Chunhua also inspected the infrastructure construction of the cave laboratory and the laser ranging platform for the "Tianqin Plan”. He expressed his approval of Zhuhai’s efforts in promoting the construction of major scientific and technological innovation platforms, and noted that Guangdong would support construction for the “Tianqin Plan” and serve the innovation driven development strategy.

Secretary Hu Chunhua hoped that we would all carefully study General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions on educational work, fully implement the Party’s educational policy, nurture virtue and talents, and make greater contributions for Guangdong’s development.
