A Delegation from Australian National University Visits SYSU

On September 15-18, 2017, a 7-member delegation from Australian National University (ANU) visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Members of the delegation included Prof. Timothy Senden, Director of ANU Research School of Physics & Engineering; Prof. Stephen Eggins, Director of ANU Research School of Earth Sciences; Prof. Allen Rodrigo, Director of ANU Research School of Biology; and Prof Michael Kyrios, Director of ANU Research School of Psychology.

On the morning of September 18, Prof. Xiao Haipeng, Vice President of SYSU, met with the delegation in Zhongshan Building on Guangzhou South Campus. He extended a warm welcome to the guests on behalf of SYSU President Luo Jun, and introduced SYSU’s history, campuses, advantageous disciplines, and focuses of future development. Vice President Xiao Haipeng also expressed the hope to enhance understanding between the two universities and explore possibilities of cooperation in student exchanges, joint degree programs, and research projects.

The ANU delegates thanked Vice President Xiao Haipeng for the warm reception, and introduced their schools respectively. They all expressed the hope that the two sides would deepen communication through the visit and reach consensus on cooperation.

Representatives from SYSU’s School of Physics & Astronomy, TianQin Research Center for Gravitational Physics, School of Earth Sciences & Engineering, and Office of International Cooperation & Exchange also attended the meeting.

During the visit, members of the ANU delegation visited SYSU’s School of Physics & Astronomy, TianQin Research Center for Gravitational Physics, School of Earth Sciences & Engineering, School of Life Sciences and Department of Psychology. The two sides held discussions on cooperation in student exchanges, joint degree programs, faculty visits, research collaborations, and summer schools. In addition, Dr. Robert Ward from ANU Research School of Physics & Engineering gave a lecture entitled "Measuring Storms In Space-time: Astronomy With Gravitational Radiation” to the faculty and students at SYSU’s School of Physics & Astronomy.

Established in 1946, ANU is a world-leading university ranked the 20th according to QS World University Rankings 2018. ANU has strengths in Astronomy, Earth and Marine Sciences, Geography, Mathematics, Political Science, Social Policy and Administration, Anthropology, Archeology, Sociology, History, Law, Anatomy and Physiology, etc. SYSU’s School of Physics and Astronomy, School of Life Sciences, School of Mathematics, and School of Government have conducted collaborations in teaching and research with ANU.
