On May 9, 2015, the Fourth International Competition for Computer-Aided Translation and Technical Communication was held in Peking University. The team “ChAseTech” led by Zhou Qiuling, an undergraduate from Department of Translation and Interpreting, School of International Studies (SIS), Sun Yat-sen University, won the second prize.

The competition, organized by the School of Software & Microelectronics, the Association of Translation and Interpretation, and the Technical Communication Association of Peking University, was designed to challenge university students to creatively solve problems in realms of technical communication and computer-aided translation. For the first round, participants had to submit a solution to the technical communication/computer-aided translation problem assigned by the organizers. All the finalists were grouped randomly at the second round (the final round). Each team was required to finish a comprehensive task.

In the final competition, Zhou Qiuling was elected as the Project Manager of the team “ChAseTech” and worked with her teammates to finish a comprehensive task involving localization, technical writing, and the use of CAT software. Members of the team also included students from Beijing Language and Culture University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Xi’an International Studies University, and China Youth University of Political Studies.

The main responsibility of Zhou Qiuling, the team leader, was to plan, execute, and finalize the project according to the needs of the client. Her role also included defining the project’s objectives and overseeing quality control throughout its life circle.

On May 9, she gave a presentation briefing the ways she adopted in coordinating the efforts of team members and the analysis in common problems and troubleshooting. Her brilliant performance impressed the judges, and she also received a couple of offers from some well-known companies such as Sigma Kudos and Beijing Trust Translation.

Zhou Qiuling has shown her talents and skills in project management and use of CAT software, which are the qualities the SIS faculty is dedicated to instilling in their students. She said, “Some skills I learned in the CAT course I attended last semester are very helpful and I can notice that many experts in Beijing think highly of SIS students and are more than willing to work with us.”
