On the afternoon of November 9, the Twelfth Guangdong University and High School Spoken English Competition Trials, undertaken by the Student Union of School of Foreign Languages (FLS) of Sun Yat-sen University, was held in FLS Building on South Campus.

The contest attracted 68 students from 13 schools and departments at SYSU, demonstrating SYSU students’ passion for English learning. Professor Chang Chenguang, Dean of FLS, addressed the event and served as one of the judges. The other judges were Gao Wenping, Wu Xiaoyan, Rachelle Escamilla and Jenny Lewis from the Department of English.
The contest consisted of self-introduction and impromptus speech, and was punctuated by interesting moments of some contestants singing a song or telling an allegorical story as lead-in. It showcased the English language proficiency and cultural accomplishment of SYSU students. The last contestant Kong, despite his physical difficulties, delivered an impressive speech about the topic of "Background" concerning his own experience. After the speeches, the judges gave comprehensive comments for all contestants, pointing out their merits and potential of improvement.

After fierce competition, the top five contestants stood out among the participating students: Zhang Shiyi from Zhongshan School of Medicine, Li Yinying from School of International Studies, Zhang Xiaoying from School of International Studies, Xu Weiyu from Lingnan College and Zhao Yi from International Business School. They will represent SYSU to participate in the Twelfth Guangdong University and High School Spoken English Competition.

The Guangdong University and High School Spoken English Competition enjoys the longest history and the biggest scale among all spoken English contests in Guangdong province. It aims to cultivate the students’ interest in speaking English, boost their confidence and display their demeanor.
