Coincided with the 20th anniversary of Spain and China entering into a comprehensive strategic partnership, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez recently visited China.

Fidel Porras González, a Spanish faculty member at SYSU’s School of International Studies, shares his journey of cultural exchanges in China and voices his aspirations for strengthened ties between the two nations. Having lived in China for nearly nine years and taught at SYSU’s Zhuhai campus for almost three, Fidel embodies the spirit of cross-cultural exchange central to this diplomatic milestone.

“The thing that I like the most of SYSU is definitely the students,” said Fidel, emphasizing how SYSU students’ thirst for knowledge fuels his teaching journey. In addition, the beautiful campuses and colleagues he met make SYSY feel like home.

Reflecting on the 20th anniversary of China-Spain relations, “I really hope that this partnership can last as long as possible especially right now that the order of the world is so complicated,” Fidel emphasized, “I really trust that Spain and China can cooperate together to really create a more fair and just order of the world.” He added that he hoped SYSU students would gain more exchange opportunities, as intercultural awareness is vital.

At the end of the interview, Fidel warmly invites SYSU community to explore his hometown, Córdoba—a city where three different cultures coexisted.
