My name is Dr. Gerard Kodjo ABASSA, also known as “Dashan,” from the Republic of Togo. I am currently pursuing a Post-PhD program at Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU).

My journey at SYSU began in September 2006. That year, my parents decided to send me to China to experience a new culture and pursue my childhood dream of becoming a doctor. Initially, I planned to complete a five-year medical program and return home immediately after graduation. However, fate had other plans, and I ended up staying in China for nearly two decades, pouring my years and passion into this land.

After completing a two-year Chinese language program, I officially embarked on my journey toward a bachelor’s degree in medicine. This was followed by a three-year master’s program in internal medicine, and then a PhD program in gastroenterology. Finally, during my post-PhD training, I gradually mastered advanced techniques for diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal diseases, seamlessly integrating theory with practice.

I study and live in its Guangzhou campus—a city renowned as one of China's most prosperous and dynamic metropolises, offering an exceptional quality of life. As a medical student and doctor, my journey at SYSU has been filled with opportunities and achievements. Under the careful guidance of my mentors, I have performed numerous surgeries and published several research papers, each step bringing me closer to my dreams. From day one, SYSU’s integrated curriculum combines basic sciences with clinical skills, laying a solid foundation for my medical career and enabling me to walk more steadily on my professional path.
