On October 22, the signing ceremony of the strategic cooperation agreement between Sun Yat-sen University and Zhuhai Municipal People’s Government was held in Zhuhai. The ceremony was presided over by Zhang Song, Secretary-General of Zhuhai Municipal People’s Government.

Secretary Zheng Detao sincerely thanked Zhuhai for its long-time and strong support on behalf of SYSU in his speech. He said that SYSU has been continuously enriching the connotations of Zhuhai Campus in recent years. First, SYSU is oriented to Zhuhai to meet the demand of Zhuhai’s economical and social development. Second, SYSU insists on international education and follows the international practice of educational modes and talent cultivation with a broader vision. Third, SYSU emphasizes on bringing into full play its function in talent cultivation, scientific research, social service and cultural leading to better serve the economical and social development of Zhuhai. Secretary Zheng Detao also stressed that the signing of the Agreement marked a further step up in the cooperation between both sides. SYSU will make greater efforts in three aspects, including promoting the close cooperation between both sides and making greater contributions to Zhuhai’s construction of a core city on the west bank of the Pearl River estuary, a modern industrial system of “Three Highs & One Special” (high-end manufacturing, high-end services, high-tech industries, and characteristic marine economy and ecoagriculture), and other major projects; enriching cooperative modes, broadening cooperative channels and improving service functions to give full play to the role of the university as a “think-tank”; achieving concrete effectiveness and serving the local community to repay the support of Zhuhai people.

He Ningka, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Zhuhai Municipal Committee and Mayor of Zhuhai, pointed out in his speech that Zhuhai Campus of Sun Yat-sen University was the first renowned university that Zhuhai introduced in the development of higher education. The construction and development of SYSU Zhuhai Campus has promoted the two brands of prestigious university and Special Economic Zone. Implementation of the in-depth strategic cooperation between Zhuhai Municipal Government and SYSU is currently a significant measure to adapt to the new developmental situation of Zhuhai and to promote the leap-forward development of Zhuhai’s higher education in the new period. It is certainly to make a big difference in cultivating high-quality talents for Zhuhai, promoting transformation and upgrade of industries, building regional innovation system and a strong cultural city. He encouraged both sides to actively advance the implementation of the strategic cooperation agreement and strengthen cooperation in talent cultivation, industry-university-research alliance, medical and health, and urban function upgrade. He also mentioned that Zhuhai would continue to provide superior service and create favorable conditions to support SYSU’S bigger and better development in Zhuhai.

The signing of the agreement indicates that SYSU has reached a consensus with Zhuhai on talent cultivation, industry-university-research alliance, urban function construction, joint construction of scientific and technological innovation platforms, and medical and health cooperation in accordance with the principle of “recourse complementation, overall innovation and mutual benefit”. SYSU is dedicated to improving its abilities of scientific innovation and its abilities to serve regional economy and social development, and promoting the development of Zhuhai’s strategic emerging industries.
