The State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies successfully hosts Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP) 2017

The 17th Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP 2017) took place on November 10-13, 2017 in Guangzhou, China. It was hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and technologies (OEMT) at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), and co–hosted by the School of Electronics and Information Technology (SEIT) of SYSU, the State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices at South China University of Technology, the South China Academy of Advanced Optoelectronics of South China Normal University, the Institute of Photonic Technology of Jinan University, the Nanophotonics Research Center of Shenzhen University, and the Chinese Laser Press. The General Chairs of ACP 2017 were Prof. Siyuan Yu, Director of the OEMT at SYSU, Prof. Chao Lu from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Prof. Xiaoping Zheng from Tsinghua University.

ACP is a high-impact international conference and the largest in scale on the topics of optical communication and photonics to be held in the Asia-Pacific Region. ACP has been held annually since 2001, jointly sponsored by The Optical Society (OSA), The International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), The IEEE Photonics Society, The Chinese Optics Society (COS) and the China Institute of Communications (CIC). ACP 2017 attracted more than 800 attendees from more than 20 countries and regions, including China, USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Australia, Singapore, Korea and Japan. Attendees included academics, researchers, R&D personnel, editors of professional journals, and postgraduate students.

Five of the most prominent international experts, including Professor Sir David Neil Payne FRS FRENG CBE from the University of Southampton, UK; Professor Eric Mazur, President of OSA and Dean of Applied Physics, Harvard University, USA; Professor Connie Chang-Hasnain, Whinnery Distinguished Chair Professor at University of California Berkeley; Dr Peter Winzer, Director of Optical Transmission Department at Bell Laboratories, USA; and Professor Dimitra Simeonidou, Royal Society Wolfson Scholar at the University of Bristol, UK, gave excellent plenary speeches covering fundamental optical physics, photonic devices, optical fibre, optiocal transmission, and optical networks. A specially invited Keynote Banquet Speech on terahertz science and technology was made by Professor Keith Nelson from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.

ACP 2017 consisted of 8 sub-conferences, 7 workshops, 1 industrial forum and 1 student training activity. 11 tutorial presentations and 119 invited presentations were made by many of the world’s prominent researchers from academia and industry. The conference received 642 regular submissions and 64 Postdeadline submissions. 309 oral presentations, 197 poster presentations and 16 postdeadline presentations were accepted, which will be officially published in OSA Publishing's Digital Library and indexed in Ei Compendex and Scopus.

The high academic standard and excellent organization of the conference have been widely praised as having reflected the latest international development in optical communication and photonics research. Attendees from all over the world relished this excellent opportunity of communicating high-level research developments and forming collaborations in optical communication and photonics. During the Conference, several tours of the OEMT laboratories have been organized for internationally-renowned experts as well as junior researchers.

The successful organization of the ACP 2017 conference and the excellent facilities and research outputs of the OEMT and the SEIT, spanning the disciplines of Optical Engineering, Optics, Information and Communication Engineering, and Electronic Science and Technology, have greatly impressed the visitors and helped to promote Sun Yat-sen University as whole to a high-level international audience.
