On 9th August 2018, AGU (American Geophysical Union) has announced the 2018 class of Fellows. Prof. Peizhen Zhang in the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering at Sun Yat-sen University is the only Chinese scholar being elected.

AGU is the most preeminent international association of earth and space scientists. Each year since 1962, AGU has elected as Fellows members whose visionary leadership and scientific excellence have fundamentally advanced research in their respective fields. Only 0.1% of AGU membership receives this recognition in any given year. This year, 62 members have been elected.

Prof. Peizhen Zhang has been recognised for his work on neotectonics and geodynamics. Innovatively combining geodetic (GPS), geological and geophysical methods, he has made exceptional achievements in various fields, including present-day tectonic deformation, continental dynamics of the Tibetan plateau, active tectonics and seismic hazard assessments, interactions between tectonic deformation and climate change. In electing Prof. Zhang an AGU Fellow, the AGU Committees lauded his work and contributions in earth sciences.
