On August 16th, Professor David L. Sedlak, Editor-in-Chief of Environmental Science and Technology (ES&T), announced the winner of the 2020 James J. Morgan ES&T Early Career Award was Dr. Jingyun Fang from Sun Yat-sen University at the opening ceremony of the 10th National Conference on Environmental Chemistry. This is the first Chinese scholar to receive this award.

The James J. Morgan ES&T Early Career Award, named after the first Editor-in-Chief of ES&T, recognizes the contributions of early career researchers who have led the field in new directions through creative, new ideas consistent with Morgan’s early contributions in environmental chemistry.

Dr. Jingyun Fang is an associate professor of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering at Sun Yat-sen University. Dr. Fang’s research is characterized by her fundamental contribution on halogen radicals and highly reactive manganese species for water pollution control. Her research received extensive attention from both academic fields and industries in China and abroad. She firstly discovered and quantitatively identified the roles and mechanism of halogen radicals for the abatement of micropollutants in the emerging UV/chlorine process, which prompted and guided the practical application of this technology. Meanwhile, she first discovered that ultraviolet photolysis of permanganate produced strong oxidants of hydroxyl radicals and reactive manganese species, which led to the invention of the totally new UV/permanganate process as a green and efficient water treatment technology.
